Our department is one of the most prestigious department in the campus and boasts of the best talent pool of the country. Currently, the department infrastructure is not at par to support the innovations and ideas that student come up in the campus. To start with, there is no designated waiting hall (or area) for visiting parents or students who have come to meet professors. The construction (or formation) of a reception area where students and visitors can wait will foster overall good perception. It can also be used in a way to promote research and books by departmental authors by keeping them around the area for waiting visitors / students to read.
A set of rooms should be created for the operations pertainig to faculties who visit the campus on the temporary basis. This can help in fostering exchange of professors with other institute and being to the institute the latest knowledge and discussions on cutting edge research. This could further provide confortability for professors and researches from other prestigious universities to come and spend time in the department, pushing the overall knowledge.
During times of exam and deadlines, students spend a lot of time in the department and, many a times, it is not feasible for the student to go to their hall to have food. In these times, having a cafeteria which could cater to the needs of the students would be a boon for them. This can help everyone focus on the task at hand and be more productive with a happy tummy. This can also cater to the professors and staff.
The most crucial aspect of student life is the availability of a space where we can interact with fellow students and learn and grow together. Unfortunately, in the current scenario, the department does not boast of any such place. The old software lab is being used for classes sometimes or is just unmaintained for most of the purposes. The formation of dedicated areas where students can sit, study and interact with others, especially during exams would be a great addition. This would also help in the bonding of departmental students and cooperation among them.
In the era of cloud computing and hardwares that work of teraflops, the students are limited by the capabilities of their personal computers especially in courses like Deep Learning, High Performance Parallel Computing etc. This is especially the case in terms of research based studies. The servers provided by CIC come with a lot of restrictions and, at times, do not provide the required amount of compute power. These days AWS, Google Cloud and Digital Ocean provide maintenance free high performance servers which can be bought and used on a departmental basis alongwith procurement of new workstations with latest hardware to faciliate and speed up the research.
